Tales from the Road

Winter Vanlife

Living in a van full time during winter is more challenging than during summer. It’s not a glamorous life but it is extremely rewarding if, like us, chasing epic skiing / snowboarding conditions is what you’re after! With proper planning it can be a magical thing… Go get it!

Vanlife Actual Cost

Budget is probably the biggest contributor of the “GO/NO-GO” decision for a trip like ours. A few years ago, we had to make guesstimates about our foreseen travel expenses. We wish we had a baseline to start with… So, in hope of helping future travelers, here are our actual expenses!

How many MPG or litres/100km do you typically do with the van? How good did you feel traction to be in the snow?

Antoine Reply April 27, 2018 at 11:46 am

We do about 16L/100km. The traction was similar to a small car; we could go pretty much anywhere we wanted. More about that here:

      Have a good one!

You guys need to ride Squamish, BC!

We keep the best for later 😉 it’s in the planning for next summer.
We went 2 years ago. Whistler (valley) and Squamish have the best trails I have ever ride! (I like STEEP and technical)

Great website and van build. I would love to check out the van in person. If you make it to Bend, OR I would be happy to show you some of the best mt bike trails or if you are here after the snow files we can hit some of the backcountry ski spots.

Bike trails, backcountry spots? You have our attention! 😉
Bend is in the planning FOR SURE, probably next summer though with our bikes.

      Hope to see you there!

Sounds good, you can wash laundry and whatever else you need as well. And we can MTB from the driveway!

Really appreciate your build write-up and the rest of your site. Just bought a Transit and will be stealing most of your well researched and thought out ideas. I’m on the outskirts of Denver, if you make it out this way I can show you some great mountain biking .

We will stop by Denver for sure, we’ll drop you a line when we’re around, thanks for the invitation!!

I don’t imagine you put every dot on your plans map but I have a couple of recommendations. While you are near Bend you should make the effort to ride the Mackenzie River trail and the amazing spectacular single track in Oakridge, OR.

    Hi guys!
Just found this awesome blog!! What a huge resource! I’m planning for a June 2018 departure about 90% the same way y’all are doing it. I just need to fit a motorcycle in the van too 😉 I’ll be watching this very closely.

I am just purchasing a 148″ mid height, standard length with a 3.5 eco boost and plan on doing a similar build to what you have done.

How much weight did your build ad to the van?

Antoine Reply August 9, 2017 at 9:36 pm

That’s funny you’re asking, we plan on weighting it at the beginning of next week. We were waiting for the conversion to be completed. Stay tuned!!

Saw your van on imgur and following now. Between Bentonville and Asheville, be sure to stop in Knoxville and hit me up for a beer, etc
